  QUALITY: Flawed FM Broadcast. The sound of this show is somewhat unusual for an FM broadcast but does improve over the course of the tape. The first minutes of the tape feature some FM signal drift that turns the tape from stereo to mono. While part of this show does circulate on video, Roth mentions that the show is being broadcasted on the radio. There are also electrical grounding noises, and odd shifts in the recording character that slightly shift the recording quality from song to song. The taper, presumably, also went to pains to edit out the DJ's occasional interjections in Spanish, but was not totally successful because snippets still remain. Despite these imperfections, this is still an outstanding recording.
  THE SHOW: This recording starts abruptly at the midpoint of "Romeo Delight." It sounds like the person in Uruguay who recorded this show may have turned on his stereo, heard the broadcast, grabbed a tape, and started recording. Thank goodness he or she did, because this tape captures one of the most interesting and satisfying post-club days performance. The band runs through a diverse and unusual setlist that includes deep LP cuts like "Little Dreamer" and "Dancing in the Streets." Overall, the band sounds like they are having a blast playing from of this stadium size crowd.
  The show is probably most memorable for Roth's "Gringo Espanol," which he frequently uses to talk to the audience. Among other comments Roth tells the audience that Uruguay is "Numero Uno en Futbol." Yet Roth does not let his showmanship get in the way of his singing. He puts a great effort into entertaining the crowd with strong and accurate vocals. In particular, he leads the band though a presumably quickly rehearsed acoustic song, sung in Spanish, called by Van Halen audio aficionados the "Ode to Montevideo."
  Roth, and the rest of the band, may have been inspired because they decided to play setlists that in many ways resembled the band's cover tune heavy sets from the early days. As with the other South American shows, the band alters their standard Diver Down set by adding an energetic cover of "Summertime Blues," done in the Who "Live at Leeds" style. And for one of the few times ever captured on tape, the band works up a mean cover of "Heartbreak Hotel." This great rendition begins with Roth's vocals taking the lead before turning the spotlight over to Edward, who fires off an intense solo. The tape concludes with Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," which if it was indeed the last song of the night, it would represent one of the rare shows that did not include "You Really Got Me." More than likely, the customary set closer was performed that night.
  All in all, the sound quality, strong performance, and diverse setlist makes this tape one of the best shows from the Roth era, and a must for every collection.

  Quality is superior to "South American Assault," and unlike that title, includes most of "(Oh) Pretty Woman" and the complete guitar solo. This production also includes the interview from the day before the show.
  Interview is an unknown gen tape transfer of an FM broadcast. The interview is conducted in Spanish with English translation for the band members. Dave expresses his eagerness to play in South America. Among other things, Dave explains why the band was not interested in putting out a live album. The interview is a typical Dave-dominated interview, very funny and enjoyable. The band is rowdy and goofing off as usual. The interview was previously in low circulation.
  Show is 2nd gen tape transfer of what is most likely an FM broadcast. Absolutely no equalization, normalization, remastering, speed correction or anything of that sort was done. All of the anomalies present on the tape such as fluctuations in sound quality and pitch were left as is. No fadeins or fadeouts were added; what you hear is what was on the tape. The only editing done was elimination of gaps, splicing together "Everybody Wants Some!!" and indexing tracks.
  Van Halen does a setlist quite different from the typical 1982 North American setlist. This is the first recording where "Dancing In The Street" appears, and the first time "So This Is Love?" appears since the Fair Warning tour. "Little Dreamer," prior to the 1983 South American run, had not been played since 1978. "Summertime Blues" is perhaps their hottest rendition. "Somebody Get Me A Doctor" from this show is one of their longest recorded jams. Finally, the guitar solo contains a preview of "Hot For Teacher."
  Dave has the crowd in the palm of his hand the entire show. His Spanish isn't exactly textbook, but the crowd eats it up, particularly on the purposefully silly "Ode to Montevideo" where the crowd can be heard singing the tune in unison even after Dave has finished. Despite its simplicity, the song is pure Dave, and only something Dave could pull off with charm and flair.
  The energy level is as high as any Van Halen show recorded. For example "Dance The Night Away," "SGMAD" and "Summertime Blues" all segue into one another. The band knows that the South American tour is a special occasion, almost as if they knew they would never play there again. This is Van Halen at its best. Hopefully this production will do the show greater justice than its predecessors.

• Fantastic, high resolution artwork is an 8 page inside booklet, undertray and back cover. (If you think the picture of "Dave" on the back doesn't look quite right, you are correct. It is a photo of one of the little people that Dave used to employ.)
